Monitoring Your Server and Usage

The Metrics card

Every virtual server's page has a Metrics card with four graphs:

• CPU Usage (%): the share of the vCPUs allocated to the server that is in use. 100% means every vCPU is fully busy.
• Memory Usage: memory in use, in GB.
• Network I/O: bytes received and sent per second on the server's network interface.
• Disk I/O: bytes read and written per second on the server's disk.

Choose the range with the buttons above the graphs: 1h, 24h, 7d, 30d or 1y. Hover over a graph for the value at a point in time.

How the figures are measured

The figures are collected by the platform from outside the server, not by an agent inside it. That is why they are available for every operating system without installing anything, and why they can differ a little from tools running inside the server such as top or Task Manager: memory in particular is measured as seen by the platform, and the figure can read higher than the one inside the server.

The resolution depends on the range: the 1h view is the finest, and the longer views show averages over progressively longer intervals, so a short spike visible at 1h can appear flattened at 30d.

How often it updates

While you are on the 1h view the graphs refresh on their own once a minute. The other ranges load when you select them; reload the page to update them.

Metrics appear once the server has been provisioned and has run for a few minutes. A new server shows "no metrics data available" until then.

The Bandwidth Usage card

If your plan includes a monthly traffic allowance, the server page shows a Bandwidth Usage card with:

• Used this period: traffic used against the allowance, in GB, as a figure and as a bar. Inbound and outbound traffic both count.
• Port speed: the speed of the server's network port.
• A Throttled badge when the allowance has been used up.

Usage is counted per billing period and starts again at zero when a new period begins. The platform checks every server's usage every fifteen minutes.

What happens as you approach the allowance

• At 80% of the allowance we send you one email for the period so you can act before the limit.
• At 100% the server's port speed is reduced for the rest of the period, and we email you to say so. The server stays online and reachable, only slower. The full speed is restored automatically when the next billing period starts.

If you regularly reach the allowance, a larger plan includes more traffic; use More, then Resize on the server page.

Usage on the Billing page

For resources billed by the hour, the Billing page shows Metered Usage (This Period): the total charged so far this calendar month across all hourly resources, and a Usage Breakdown listing each resource with its hours and cost. Monthly-billed servers do not appear here; their charge is on the renewal invoice instead. See Hourly Billing for how hourly charges are taken.

Alerts

The bandwidth emails above are the only automatic alerts the platform sends about a server's resource use. There are no CPU, memory or disk-space alerts from the dashboard. Inside your server, disk space in particular is worth watching yourself: a full disk is a frequent cause of services stopping, and the Metrics card shows disk activity, not disk space.

Your server is self-managed, so monitoring what runs inside it is under your control. Any monitoring agent or service of your choice can be installed on the server; the dashboard graphs continue to work alongside it.
